kilogram
Symbol: kg
A very common metric unit of mass equivalent to 1000 grams. This is the base unit of mass in both the SI and MKS metric systems.

It is defined as the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram, a platinum-iridium bar made in the 1800s which is kept in a locked vault at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) near Paris, France. Copies of the bar, called national prototypes of the kilogram, are kept at various standards agencies in nearly every industrial nation.

Originally it was defined as 1000 times the mass of a cubic centimeter of pure water at the temperature of melting ice. Later this was changed to the mass of one litre of pure water at standard atmospheric pressure and temperature at its highest density. These definitions were difficult to create accurately, so the definition was changed to the current definition in 1889.
