converting cubic yards to tons again

converting cubic yards to tons again

I am interested in finding out how to convert cubic yards to tons for lava rock.  I am building a natural pond and need to line my liner with lava rock.  Why is this always so confusing?  and why does everyone say it one cubic yard equals one ton?  Please help.

I could not find the density of lava rock, so I wont be able to help you with that.

To convert volume to weight you need to know the density. Every substance will have a different weight to volume conversion factor.

Where did you find 1 cubic yard = 1 ton? It could be correct, not sure. Was the data listed specifically for lava rock?

thank you for the reply.  It seems that most people I have contacted seem to think that one cubic yard is equal to one ton, roughly.  Considering density they could be off by a few hundred pounds though.  I think it is more of a volume issue and that most people equate one pallet of wired rock (cubic yard) is similar to about a ton of material.  Does this make sense, i don't know.
