Fabric - sq inches to sq yrds

:-/ As a beginner quilter I have been trying to figure out how to figure how many yards of fabric I need for each project. Starting with inches (for now squares), getting to sq inches to yards (or sq yrds). I even recruited my teenage sons but would like some confirmation on our differing figures. Pleease help! There has [glow=red,2,300]got to be a[/glow] method to this madness. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! :-* (in advance). Lyn

Well its easy enough to convert square inches to square yards, just divide by 1296.
The problem arises in how wide the roll of cloth is, versus how wide the pattern is. If the pattern width is a multiple of the roll width, you wont have any problem. Otherwise you have to add in the amount of waste.
