milligrams to something else...

we can't find a scale that will measure as small as milligrams (ie: 1 milligram, 5 milligrams)  so I was wondering if we can convert milligrams to something that's more easily measured?  Any ideas?

You could convert them to grams by dividing by 1000.  Grams is fairly common on scales.

1 milligrams is 0.001 grams
5 milligrams is 0.005 grams
etc.
